Sewing in Naigobya |
| Monday, December 24, 2007 |
The Sewing project is yet another story of ingenuity and blessing in Naigobya. The project was formed in 2006 by Florence Babigumila who is currently their leader. In the beginning, they lacked sewing machines yet a large number of women wanted to train in tailoring. Later that year, the women were blessed with two sewing machines donated by one of our “Friends of Naigobya”. The women convene at the church treasurer’s compound every day. These women are learning sewing and tailoring skills which will enable them to provide for their families.
As usual, each project interacts with other projects in the village. The sewing project makes the uniforms for the children attending the village school. They also are using their new skills to make Sanitary Kits which enable young women to stay in school once they hit puberty.
In 2007, the group was blessed with 5 more machines and the group has grown to 20 women and one man! They actually have 52 women registered, but there is not enough machines or supplies to support everyone who would like to learn. They share machine time as best they can and also use paper instead of fabric when learning. It is our desire to help this initiative grow to accommodate all who would like to learn.
We have found that it’s not simply a matter of dusting off our old sewing machine in the basement and donating it. There is one major obstacle…..electricity. Electricity is scarce and unreliable in the village. Treadle (manual) sewing machines are the only option. The white machines shown in the photos are manual machines manufactured here in the U.S. for the Amish. These machines are high-quality and stand up well to the Ugandan elements.
Mike and Laureen from our group are visiting Naigobya in March 2008 and are able to carry 6 more machines in their luggage. They would also like to bring fabric and supplies and some extra funds to take the women on a shopping trip where they can learn the skill of buying their own fabric in the market place.
This project is another example of how giving what we have can be multiplied to bless so many. If you are interested in finding out more or would like to partner with us, please contact Mike at schaser_family@msn.com. A couple hundred US Dollars can provide a machine that allow several people the opportunity to learn a trade, and have the dignity of earning a living for their family.
