First Visit in 2008 |
| Monday, March 17, 2008 |
Mike and Laureen left today for Uganda. With them they carried 7 rubbermaid tubs filled with foot operated sewing machines and gobs of fabrics. These machines will be given to the hugely popular and successful sewing training program in Naigobya.
Emmaus Road Church (Hopkins, MN) graciously provided school supplies for the recently opened school (for orphans and those who cannot afford the fees at the public school). Other individiuals provided funds for several sewing machines and provided fabric, in addition to other items. Others have graciously given thousands of dollars to be used to provide materials for the sewing training program, a soon-to-be-starting craftsman/woodworking training program, and continued investment in the livestock raising/giveaway initiative.
The health center continues to treat hundreds of patients each month. We look forward to seeing and hearing the stories of better health and healing!
Mike and Laureen are also going to be exploring the starting of a micro lending program. Micro lending is a phenomenom that provides small loans (usually less than $50 USD) to individuals at a low interest rate for a number of months - to approved indiviuals with a plan for a business. This type of community investment has been called a significant means to helping the world's poor (especially women) break out of poverty. We want to give small loans to trustworthy hard workers who can use the capital to enable themselves to earn a wage for themselves, and create jobs and economic opportunity for their community. We want to see that happen in Naigobya.
More updates as Mike and Laureen hit the ground in Uganda on the 18th. Stay tuned.
As always - a HUGE THANK YOU on behalf of the residents of Naigobya for your willingness to put your love and caring into action - to help create hope and a future for "the least of these."
PS - 3/18 2:00am - Mike and Laureen arrived in Amsterdam - the half way point on the way to east Africa.
