Mosquito Netting in Kyabazala |
| Friday, January 09, 2009 |
On our recent trip, our team spent an amazing day in the village of Kyabazala (Cha-baa-zal-a). We were blessed with the privilege of bringing life-saving mosquito netting to the children and their families. Mosquitoes in the area carry Malaria from person to person. Malaria is currently the number one killer in the world. It is especially tragic in central Africa.
The children each came forward to receive their nets. We started with the orphans and most needy then worked our way through all the children.
Then the mothers with tiny babies
.
and the elderly Grandmothers who are left to care for so many orphans.
In all, we distributed 150 nets which reached all families in the church.
Our team was so humbled by the huge impact of what was happening. The chances of these children dying from Malaria before our next visit has dramatically decreased. They have a fighting chance against at least this threat to their little lives.
Malaria Info:
- There is prevention and treatment for Malaria, but due to lack of access to healthcare and medicine, many die from the disease.
- The best way to impact the problem is by stopping the mosquitoes that carry the disease. Since mosquitoes are most active at night, people need to sleep under a bed net that keeps out the mosquitoes.
- The bed nets are treated with an insecticide that is harm-less to people but will kill the mosquito when it lands on the net. Dead mosquitoes cannot move on and infect someone else.
- Studies prove that the insecticide treated nets can also protect the communities at large when coverage is high enough (more than 80% of people in the target community sleeping under a treated net).
- Families will sleep 4-5 people under one net if necessary.
- The treated nets cost just $10 each.
There is a great need of more mosquito netting. The more coverage in an area, the more mosquitoes can be stopped. Just $10 per net can save lives.
