Clean Water for Kabuli
   Friday, January 30, 2009

The road to Kabuli is really more of a path. But at the end of that path, live some of the most wonderful people! Our team visited the village during the November trip and were over-whelmed by the warm and genuine greeting that we received from this remote village located about 15 miles Northeast of Naigobya.

We brought them bibles in their native Lugandan language. We were greeted by the men, played with the children and received many hugs from the women! We asked to see their water source and were relieved to find that they had a borehole. But our hearts began to break when we were told that it had been broken for the past 8 months.

In 1997, a humanitarian group had installed the borehole but without on-going maintenance it was in ill-repair. The 70 families (450 individuals) who normally would get their water from the borehole have been traveling 4 miles away to another water source. The quality and cleanliness of this alternate “water source” has not been confirmed. Also, carrying heavy "gerry cans" full of water 4 miles at least three times a day is not an easy task.

The good news is that the borehole can be repaired for approximately $2,200. Which is significantly cheaper than drilling a completely new borehole. Friends of Uganda has decided to help the village of Kabuli with repairing their borehole. The village will elect a committee to take responsibility for the borehole and its maintenance going forward so the same situation does not happen again.

FSU received a year-end gift of $1,000 from one of our friends who has a heart for bringing clean water to Uganda. Another $1,200 is needed and the beautiful people of Kabuli will have their water back.
